What to Do When Someone Walks Into the Room During the SessionUpdated a month ago

"The session has no pause button. If someone walks in, you do not leave the room in your head. You keep the session in the room. You close the loop fast, without stories, and you return to the work before attention scatters.

WHEN SOMEONE ENTERS, SAY THIS

Use one short line. Calm voice. No explanation.

- “I’m in a session. I’ll come find you when the flame is out.”

- If needed, add: “If it’s urgent, say ‘urgent.’ Otherwise I’ll come when the candle ends.”

Point to the flame while you speak. Do not stand up. Do not remove headphones. Do not ask questions. End the interaction with a gentle nod and eyes back to the page.

30-SECOND RETURN PROTOCOL

Keep your return simple and physical.

- Hands off keyboard. Look at the flame. Exhale once.

- Say the line. Point to the flame.

- If they continue, repeat once: “I’ll come when the flame is out.” Turn back to work.

- Capture any task they mentioned on a single line: “After flame: [name/task].”

- Re-read the last sentence you wrote. Type the next obvious action.

- Do all of this in under 30 seconds.

USE THE FLAME AS A SIGNAL

Make the lit candle a clear sign, like a closed door.

- Lit flame = do not enter unless urgent.

- Place the tin where it’s visible from the doorway.

- Keep the empty tin on the shelf when not in use. When you light it and move it to the desk, everyone knows the session is active.

SET THE RULE BEFORE SESSIONS

Reduce friction by setting expectations once, not during.

- “When the flame is lit, I can’t talk. If it’s urgent, say ‘urgent’ and I’ll step out. Otherwise, I’ll come find you when it’s out.”

- With children, pair a hand signal: palm down = not now, fist = urgent only.

- At work, add a small card: “Deep work until [time]. Urgent? Please knock and say ‘urgent.’”

IF IT’S TRULY URGENT

Stand up. Handle it briefly. When you return, you have two choices:

- If you broke silence for more than a minute, accept the break and relight for a fresh session later.

- If under a minute, re-enter using the 30-second protocol and finish with the current flame.

AFTER THE FLAME DIES

Go close the loop. Find the person. Handle what they needed. This protects trust in the ritual and keeps future sessions calmer."
